Hypnosis for Smoking Cessation

An entrepreneur with a PhD in clinical hypnotherapy from Albert University, Ronald Cupp owned several Positive Changes Hypnosis Centers franchises from 2001 to 2008. Together with a team of more than 40 licensed hypnotists, Ronald Cupp utilized hypnosis to help more than 7000 clients change problematic personal behavior.

While hypnosis is not a magic bullet to help an individual quit smoking, it can be a helpful component of a smoking cessation program. Typically, hypnosis is most successful when it follows the implementation of several behavioral changes, as well as when the patient is truly motivated and serious about quitting. Usually performed over several sessions, hypnosis involves putting the smoker into an altered state of awareness in which he or she is more receptive to suggestions. Smoking cessation hypnosis usually focuses on the idea that smoking is poisonous, the body is vital for life, and quitting is essential for good health.

While there are few studies on the benefits of hypnosis focused on smoking, the American Cancer Society offers anecdotal evidence that smoking cessation hypnosis can be helpful for the right person.
